Now it’s time to implement: Roundtable on the Global Energy Storage and Grid Pledge

At COP29, 65 countries endorsed the Global Energy Storage and Grid Pledge, committing to a sixfold increase in ESS capacity by 2030 and major grid upgrades. Yet deployment momentum has not accelerated as expected, with policy uncertainty, slow regulatory harmonization, and investment risks contributing to hesitation. This roundtable will examine national-level implementation challenges and best practices, and explore policy, finance, and technology coordination strategies to accelerate large-scale ESS deployment and investment.\n

South Korea’s petrochemical industry, the fourth-largest globally, is uniquely positioned between China’s rapid growth and the structural shifts in Europe and Japan. \nOnce export-driven, it now faces profitability challenges due to global oversupply and China’s rise. As global demand shifts toward cleaner chemical products—spurred by initiatives like the Plastics Treaty and CBAM—South Korea stands at a critical juncture where it can turn crisis into opportunity by leading the decarbonization. \nIts transition could catalyze broader changes across East Asia’s petrochemical supply chain.\n

[Webinar] The Road to Net-zero Steel in Korea and Japan

The steel sector is known to be the largest emitter, accounting for about 7% of the world's annual GHG emissions, and in South Korea, it accounts for a staggering 15% of total national GHG emissions, and in Japan, about 13%. This webinar aims to share the findings of the steel sector decarbonization strategies of two major steel producers and Asian neighbors, South Korea and Japan, and compare their similarities and differences in terms of implementation strategies, technological alternatives, and policy instruments that can support them.
